The editor wishes to acknowledge his debt to Mr Norman Ault’s Seventeenth Century Lyrics in which, along with the famous poems of the period, numerous unkown works were printed or reprinted for the first time. Also, in the case of a number of poems which have survived in a variety of versions, the Editor, in making his choice from these, has been influenced by the exhaustive and scholarly researches which have made Mr Ault the recgonized authority in this field.
